Our Historic Journey
Established in 1994, Surplus Coatings was initially a broker of off-spec and manufacturer's excess powder coating. Dwayne Behrens was appointed CEO of Surplus Coatings by its founders in 1995. Before recycling gained widespread popularity, Surplus Coatings started establishing creative uses for the material under Behrens' direction.
In his capacity as CEO, Behrens expanded commercial opportunities outside of the US by leveraging his background in sales and international trade. In 2001 Surplus Coatings was purchased by Dwayne Behrens and became a division of Coatings by PCD, Inc. Early in his powder coating career Behrens wondered if there was a green solution for the 2 billion pounds of excess powder coating that goes into the world’s landfills, waterways, and incinerators. There was no singular process and no market precedent for a sustainable and recycled powder coating solution, but a single-minded commitment drove him and his team to develop the Innovakote process and the reimagining of a more sustainable powder coat industry. In 2019 Coatings by PCD and Surplus Coatings established its first Powder Conversion Depot using the Innovakote process at its recycling plant in Kent City Michigan.
